NMA President's Message NMA President Rick Dahl shares his opinions about diverse subjects, including the current state of off-road motorcycling in Washington state. July 5, 2005 "Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all." As we pass through the drier months in Washington State, we also work our way through the bulk of the riding calendar. Thusly, I felt it would be appropriate to acknowledge the clubs and the work members of clubs do to give us events to participate in. As one who has had the opportunity to put on events, I can attest to the time commitments required by club members to make an event both enjoyable and safe. Many weekends and evenings are sacrificed to ensure both of the above are accomplished before the actual event. The commitments needed to mark and arrow a course, or courses, do clearing or repair work on the designated course(s), get people lined up to work checkpoints, sign-up, sound test, pre-ride, sweep, clean-up, etc. is more than most would attempt. In addition, most if not all events involve working with a government agency for permits, etc, which would probably drive most mortals away at the outset. It makes you wonder why anyone would willingly subject themselves to do this. I know we pay a fee for riding events, but trust me, after the cost of supplies, trophy's, and whatever else may be needed, the income generated factored into the hours of work required to put on an event would not meet minimum wage requirements. No one is buying condos in Hawaii with income earned from an event. So, the question remains, why do these men and women do this for us? The answer is surprisingly simple. They love this sport and the positive benefits it has bestowed upon them and those that participate. How many of you have raised your families in this sport and developed friendships that span a lifetime? I would guess most have. How many times have we seen a rider or family in need and nobody offers to help? Never would be my answer. Bear Bryant, the great football coach, knew he had a team when he saw 'one heartbeat'. We have an off-road community that operates with 'one heartbeat' and it has always been my belief that it is the clubs in our off-road community that form the nucleus. They do what they do not for money, not for personal gain, but for the love of our sport, for the love of family, and for the friendships that span a lifetime. I try to always thank them for their efforts and would ask that you do to. Best Regards, |
